That's Not Running...

So after reading Ronis post about running 5K and Happy Blog Chicks post on Friday about her upcoming 5K, I decided that I would run for a distance on Saturday. Typically I run for time...30 minutes-1.5 hours, and I have been wanting to change that to distances 3-9 miles. So Saturday rolled around and I spent the morning with my adorable niece Rosie! After her mom picked her up I decided to hit the gym for a run. Instead of setting my usual incline, speed and 45 minutes, I hit the 5K button. I am not familiar with this setting so I decided to start at level 1, which starts with a short warm up and then moves into running 3 small hills.
The treadmill started my warm up at 3 mph, very comfortable walk, then it takes me up to 4.5 mph, then 5.0, then 5.5, then it kept going! About every 1-2 minutes the things started to speed up on me! Now realize, I am fairly short...5'-2" on a very good day and most of that height is in my torso. So by 6 mph I am sprinting pretty dang hard, sweating bullets and totally off on my breathing. I stuck with the machine for about 3 minutes and then manually brought my speed back down to 5.4 mph. At this speed I am still pushing myself, I am still sweating, but I can breathe and talk. I finished off the 5K at my comfort speed and felt great after. Anyways, getting to my title, I went to work this morning and was telling one of my co-workers about how bad I was sweating on the treadmill, etc... and another co-worker over hears and says "5.4 mph? That's not even running..." I just stood there in shock. I had no idea what to say. This women is at least 5'-10" and is mostly legs. She has been running since high school and she is one of the people who really inspired me to start running in the first place.
All day I have been down about this. She claims that a run is 6-10 mph, and a jog is 4-5 mph, anything under that is walking. Is there really any truth to this? Seriously, it feels like someone just walked up and popped my happy bubble. So

How incredibly rude!

5.4 is most certainly running for those of us who haven't been running our entire lives! It is absolutely running!

Harrumph!

We're not going to be winning any awards, but darn it, we're running!

The mindset that someone needs to be running FAST to be running ... well, that's only going to get us injured or give us a heart attack. Shame on her.

Ignore that co-worker. I was impressed with your treadmill run, personally. Good for you!

First off WOOHOO for even attempging that. And secondly, you said it yourself, the woman is all legs, her stride is longer than yours. It'd be like Rosie against a 5 year old (I'm making Rosie 3 cuz I can't remember how old she is). Of course a longer leg is going to thing the slower pace isn't running. I'm only 5'5 but all leg and walk fast because I can cover more ground per stride. Ignore the coworker and know that YOU WERE RUNNING! :)

WHAT!! What a hateful thing to say! First of all you totally know your body AND you are incredibly fit. Secondly, everyone's body - that is like expecting me to benchpress as much as the MALE 6ft3, 215 pound guy in the corner!! That is absolutely crazy!

I come to your blog to get exercise tips and you inspire me to try running so please don't knock yourself - I need you to keep me motivated to try it out! Here is my problem though - I have horrible balance on a treadmill and even speed walking gives me awful shin splints - what's a girl to do???

(((HUGS))) and YOU ROCK!!! By the way - did you ask said co-worker if she had ever walked 60 miles to raise money for cancer??? Because in my opinion - until you've done that, you haven't exercised! Okay sorry - my hateful Barbie fit is over - just makes me so darn mad when people are ugly to my friends!

WHATEVER!!!!

I am short too (5'3") and if I can't breathe or talk and I am sweating profusely--that's running! That's a bunch of BS from that co-worker. You haven't been a runner your whole life...she has, that's why she thinks she can say that. That was soo very rude of her!!! I was impressed with what you did, so tell her to bug off! ;)
